Toy Chest

Jordan’s Toy Chest

I will admit to having a lot of toys, but this toy box is not for me — my friend Jeremy and his wife Courtney are expecting a baby any day now, and this box will hold her toys. Jeremy and I have worked together to design and assemble this box, which is approximately 40″ wide x 18″ deep x 21″ tall. One of the considerations was how to work with birch plywood and avoid sharp corners on the box. We accomplished that by creating corner posts with dadoes that accept the 3/4″ plywood. The solid birch corners could then be rounded and the plywood edges are not exposed. The top is designed to be a seat, and they will get a cushion made and velcro it to the top.

Do you have plans available for this toy chest. I love the feet. I also can’t figure out what size ply you used.

I do not have any plans, sorry. I began with some 3/4 inch birch plywood, and some birch lumber. The corners were made with 1- 1/2 inch square birch that was dadoed to the thickness of the plywood (which was a little bit thinner than 3/4″).

I knew the basic size we were working toward, and just built it to fit their space.

The feet were made by cutting a little ogee profile on the edge of a piece of birch, then cutting two short pieces at a 45 degree miter and gluing them together.

      Hope that helps.
